This is an update on Olivia Newton-John’s cancer and the role medical cannabis is playing in her life. The 70-year-old English-Australian singer and actress has Stage Four breast cancer that has metastasized (spread) to her lower back.

Her cancer was first diagnosed in 1992 and she underwent chemotherapy, a partial mastectomy, and breast reconstruction. Cancer returned in 2013 and again in 2017. By then, it had spread to her bones.

All of this cancer news could be devastating but Olivia Newton-John seems to be handling it well. She credits cannabis with helping her.

“I really believe the cannabis has made a huge difference. If I don’t take the drops I can feel the pain, so I know it’s working.”

Her husband and she live near Santa Barbara, CA now. Since cannabis is legal there, he’s growing the cannabis and making it into cannabis oil. Since Olivia has never been a cannabis smoker (she tried it once in the ’70s), she prefers to take drops of it under her tongue.

Olivia insists that she isn’t “battling cancer”. In fact, she has a completely different approach to it.

“I don’t talk about a battle or a war because I think that sets up that kind of feeling in your body of you’re bottling something strange inside you. I let it go.”

And, she has no interest in knowing what her life expectancy is either. She’d rather focus on positive news.

“I don’t read statistics. If you believe the statistics, you’re going to make them happen. If somebody tells you, ‘You have six months to live’, very possibly you will because you believe that.”

These days she’s focused on raising money for cannabis research in Australia. Her Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne is hoping to fund clinical trials on medical cannabis there.

In order to raise money, she’ll be holding an auction in Beverly Hills, CA in November. You can expect to see lots of memorabilia from her career. That includes costumes and other items from the movies “Grease” and “Xanadu”.

In her free time, she’s enjoying spending time with her family and friends at her home place near Santa Barbara. Her thoughts about her cancer are thoughts about it just going away…disappearing.

“So for me, psychologically, it’s better not to have any ideas of what they expect or what the last person that had what you have lived – so I don’t tune in, it’s just better for me. It’s something that I’m living with but I don’t see it that way. It’s a choice. Everything’s a choice.”
