Michigan Vacation- But Where’s the Cannabis?

By Dan Larkin

I’m heading out on a vacation to Michigan but where’s the cannabis? It’s the 4th of July weekend and I thought it was a perfect time to go on a little road trip. Michigan’s motto is: “Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumspice” “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.” So, I thought I would.

I thought it would also be great to visit the first state in the Midwest to legalize cannabis since I work in the industry. Makes sense, right?

Michigan Vacation Begins

My road trip will start in Minneapolis and take me across Wisconsin. Next, I’ll get on a ferry for a 4 hour trip across Lake Michigan. Those first two legs of the journey are definitely cannabis-less with no tourist stops planned to visit any dispensaries. Cannabis is still illegal in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Note: Technically, I won’t be without cannabis. I’ll have my homemade CBD oil and cream along. I make it with hemp purchased legally in Minnesota. I decarboxylate it with my Ardent Nova decarboxylator. If you’ve never made your own CBD products at home, you might want to try it. But, that’s a CannabisIRL 101 article for another day.

So, at least I’ll stay comfortable for the long road trip. I like to use it for relieving the aches and pains. We baby boomers seem to notice those more and more as each year passes. That’s it though for cannabis products.

I’ll disembark from the ferry in Michigan. At that point, I’ll be in a state that has legalized adult use of cannabis. So, that’s where things should get interesting, right?

Well, yeah, “interesting” is probably the best word to describe what’s happening in Michigan. As I said, adult-use (recreational) cannabis is legal in Michigan. So, you’d think that once off the boat I could head to a dispensary and check out the Michigan cannabis scene. But that’s not gonna happen.

Michigan Cannabis Laws are Complicated

You see, while Michigan legalized cannabis on December 6, 2018, they won’t be ready to open any licensed, adult-use dispensaries until sometime in 2020.

Now, if you live in Michigan you can grow up to 12 cannabis plants at home and enjoy as much as you care to from those plants. Or, and this is where it gets a little weird, you can possess up to 10 ounces of flower as long as only 2.5 ounces is sitting out on your coffee table. The rest has to be locked up. But, I guess it’s better to lock up cannabis than lock up cannabis users so there’s that!

But, where do you get that cannabis flower if you didn’t grow it and you can’t buy it at a dispensary? Well, it turns out it can be “gifted” to you from any other adult resident of Michigan who’s grown it at home.

In fact, a Michigan resident could technically even gift cannabis to me, a tourist, if they wanted to. The key though, is that no money can change hands. (See, it wouldn’t be a gift then, would it?) Oh, and they can only gift up to 2.5 ounces of flower.

It’s a cannabis “gift”

Now, if I ran into someone from Michigan who grew their own cannabis and they wanted to gift it to me, that would an interesting exchange. It would probably have to go something like this:

Me: Hi, Michigan resident over the age of 21. I was just admiring your 2.5 ounces of cannabis that you have there on your private property.

Michigan resident: Well howdy old man! (Do they say howdy in Michigan?) You seem like a nice person. Probably from a state that hasn’t legalized cannabis. You know, I sure would like to give you a gift for visiting us here in Michigan. Would you like 2.5 ounces or less of some of my homegrown cannabis? It came from one of the 12 plants that I grow in this private residence.

Me: Gee, yes I would! Do you mean to say you’re going to just hand over that cannabis to me at no cost whatsoever?

Michigan resident: Umm, no. See, what’s going to happen here is you’re going to purchase a service from me. Then once I perform the service for a fee, I will gift you the cannabis. So what do you say, can I give you directions to Mackinac Island for $300?

Me: $300 for directions that I can get for free from my GPS?

Michigan resident: Yes, but it comes with this neat gift pack of cannabis that you were admiring.

Conclusion

So, that would be one scenario of how I could end up legally sampling cannabis in Michigan. While it’s not very likely to happen, you never know. There are a lot of ingenious entrepreneurs out there and I’ve heard stories of people getting creative.

I will let you know how my vacation to Michigan goes when I get back. Wish me luck!
