Cannabutter: My “Gateway Drug”-A Reader’s Story:
This is a Cannabis In Real Life story from a baby boomer who didn’t think cannabis had a place in her life…until she tried it. Find out how cannabutter became her “gateway” to pain relief and quality of life.
I was in pain. Real pain. Which was new to me, because I am one of those lucky people who really isn’t sick very often. I honestly don’t think I would have tried it otherwise. But when he suggested that I try this totally weird butter, I was willing but pretty doubtful. I mean, it’s butter, right?-Anonymous
Cannabutter, My “Gateway Drug”
Several years ago, my husband and I moved to a new home with a huge, lush backyard. I was in heaven until we discovered the endless hours of weeding that it would require. We bought the house while the snow was still piled high, so we were blissfully unaware! What does this have to do with cannabutter? I’m at the tail-end of the Baby-Boomer Generation, making me not-that-old, but certainly not-that-young either. So, spending 10-12 hours on the ground pulling tough weeds really took a toll on my arms, wrists, and hands.
Right about that time, my husband took a real interest in cannabis (frequently reminding me it isn’t “marijuana”). To be honest, I wasn’t super thrilled about his new interest. Pot was scary to me. Growing up there was nothing positive about it. I hadn’t ever really smoked pot much, a little in college, but it always put me to sleep – which seemed a little counter-productive when I was out with my friends on a Saturday night!
Cannabutter to the rescue.
But, one weekend he made something he called cannabutter. You can look up how to make it because I never have. I just know it takes a good bit of time and involves cooking cannabis and butter together. (I’m sorry if that is too scientific. As a disclaimer, medical cannabis and CBD produced from hemp is legal in our state!)

We had spaghetti for dinner. I put a very light coating of cannabutter on my toast – with some garlic powder, just to be transparent! 20 minutes later, I felt no more pain. Really. Some stiffness in my hands, but no pain. Unbelievable – butter (with a little cannabis) became my gateway to using CBD regularly. And, as I’m aging, I’m using it daily.
Changing minds. One person at a time.
It seems to me that is how most people are changing their minds about cannabis. One day they find that someone – a friend, a family member, or they themselves – are suffering and cannabis is the most natural, not-harmful, non-addictive, method to take the person they care about out of pain. Or even more powerful, keep them from having seizures, or migraines, or nausea, etc. Who knows what all it can do, because there hasn’t been a lot of research on cannabis yet.
That’s my story. It’s sad that I don’t feel I can identify myself. Maybe someday that will change! But, don’t be too hard on those that haven’t caught on yet or are too scared to try cannabis. The stigma is very strong. Those of us who grew up with that stigma find it hard to shake.
And try some cannabutter. It will change your life!
