DAN: I’m Dan Larkin and this is Cannabis Conversations from Cannabis In Real Life- Real People. Real Storie. Real Life.

We’re here at the Minnesota State Capitol building. We’re talking with a mom, Julia. Hi Julia. You were one of the people here today talking about patient access to medical cannabis. Can you tell us a little bit about your particular story?

JULIA: Absolutely! So, I am a PTSD patient; a medical cannabis patient here in Minnesota and I was talking a little bit about during my pregnancy, being forced to make hard decisions regarding my medication and, how as a result of following more conventional medicinal advice and frankly scare tactics from the medical community, I decided to go with pharmaceuticals instead of medical cannabis and that had some pretty nasty results for me.

So, I’d like to see other moms have better opportunities.

DAN: What do you think, right now, is the roadblock to that access?

JULIA: Stigma is definitely a big roadblock. Just the idea that there is sort of a negative connotation associated with using cannabis, or being a mom using cannabis, but also, price is a big factor and particularly both of those factors, whether it’s price or accessibility, or stigma about all of those are going to be more greatly affecting people of color, people with disabilities, LGBTQ people, anyone who’s more marginalized by society already is going to be more affected by these rules and so that’s why medical cannabis a human rights issue. It really is, and there’s such a stigma attached to it.

DAN: What would you say to other moms or maybe expectant moms who are looking at this?

JULIA: To other moms, I would say that you’re not alone and that there are other people out there who are able to help you get the access that you need. And then, people are here fighting for you so don’t give up!

DAN: Julia, thank you for your time we appreciate it.
