Can You Donate Blood if You Take CBD?
by Dan Larkin.
The other day a friend asked me, “Can you donate blood if you take CBD?” They take CBD daily to relieve some aches and pains and to help get better sleep. The concern was whether their blood would be rejected when screened. Also, would it then disqualify them from future donations?
These are valid concerns and I honestly hadn’t thought about it. I decided to look into it. So, if you’re planning on donating blood soon, or if you are a regular donor who’s started using CBD, then read on for some guidance.
Blood donations in the US.
First of all, there are a number of places to donate blood. The first place that comes to mind for many in the US is through the Red Cross. They are a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief, and disaster preparedness education in the United States.
But, they are also the folks asking for your blood donations the most often. Their 53 regional blood centers collect more than half of the nation’s blood supply, or 6.5 million units a year.
Depending on where you live, you may also have other local or regional blood banks that serve your community. Most are not-for-profit organizations. They often operate blood donation events throughout the year. Many have mobile units that they can bring to larger employers or events to make it easy to donate.
What are the blood donation rules?
Regardless of where, or to whom you donate, the rules are largely the same. Basically, you need to be in good general health. You can’t be intoxicated at the time of your donation. You obviously have to be able to give your consent to have your blood donated. For more specific information about donating requirements for the Red Cross, you can go here.
So, can you donate if you take CBD or not?
As far as CBD use or cannabis use; good news! It turns out that there are no restrictions on donating blood or platelets if you are using or have used CBD or cannabis. That includes products containing THC.
In fact, most, if not all blood banks don’t screen or test for cannabinoids in the blood they collect. But, again, keep in mind that they don’t want someone showing up so stoned that they can’t give consent. That’s frankly dumb and a waste of everybody’s time. So, don’t ever be that person.
Now, again, keep in mind that each organization is different and some may actually have their own rules prohibiting donation by people who have consumed cannabis or CBD. I just couldn’t find any in my research.
Conclusion: Taking CBD and donating blood.
So, CBD and cannabis consumers, in general, are safe to donate blood. But, remember to always answer any screening questions honestly and be transparent about your health and history. There are a lot of other reasons why people can’t donate blood and you can see a list of many of them here.
So, relax my friend. Go and do something really good for someone else. Donate your blood and fear not. Hopefully, you’ll never need to receive blood from a donor, but if you do, you will have a new appreciation for everyone else who took the time to literally give of themselves.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns about donating your blood, your general health, or eligibility to do so, consult your doctor. My information should not be construed as medical advice. I am not a doctor and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. (You have to have seen the commercials to get that one.)
