A bill to decriminalize cannabis nationwide is being introduced by Sen. Kamala Harris (D) and House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler (D). This sweeping cannabis reform would decriminalize cannabis nationwide. It would also expunge cannabis arrest records.

Also, landlords would be prevented from denying housing because of cannabis use or possession.

“We need to start regulating marijuana and expunge marijuana convictions from the records of millions of Americans so they can get on with their lives.”

Sen. Kamala Harris

The bill to decriminalize cannabis nationwide- the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (MORE Act) would remove cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act. Then, states would decide their own marijuana policies, just like they do for alcohol.

Another aspect of the bill would be its protection of immigrants. Immigrants wouldn’t be deported just for having a cannabis arrest or for cannabis possession.

Kamala Harris’ views on cannabis law reform have been evolving quickly. She has admitted to using cannabis many years ago. Now, she appears to be “all in” with co-sponsorship of this bill.

Will this bill actually become law? Well, that’s anyone’s guess. The issue will be whether or not they can find support for this from Republicans.
